Tropical Shipping Announces Port Change in Canadian Service

Palm Beach, FL:  Tropical Shipping is committed to providing the highest quality, on-time shipping services to our customers. Please be advised of the following change to our port operations in Canada.

Effective January 9th, 2017, Tropical Shipping will move its port operations to Halterm Container Terminal in the Port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. This move will improve our long term commitment to our customers with improved intermodal connections and terminal capacity designed to meet market demands. Tropical Shipping’s Canadian service will continue to provide a weekly sailing every Monday from the Halterm Container Terminal, Halifax.

Tropical Shipping’s last sailing from the Port of Saint John will be December 27, 2016.

We want to thank the Port of Saint John and Logistec for their valued partnership and excellent service over the past 15 years. The Port of Saint John has been a supporter of Tropical Shipping and we appreciate the relationship.

Tropical Shipping has had a presence in Canada for over 30 years. It is our belief that this strategic move will better align Tropical Shipping now and in the future with the ability to service the Canadian market with the best shipping service to Florida, The Bahamas and the Caribbean. Tropical Shipping will maintain its local office in Saint John, New Brunswick.

74 Foss Maritime Vessels Honored for Environmental Excellence

Thirty-seven Vessels Recognized for 10+ Years of Incident-Free Operation

WASHINGTON, DC – With a combined 843 years without an incident, 74 Foss Maritime and subsidiary companies’ tugs and tank barges have been recognized by a major maritime organization for their environmental records.

The Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) announced the 2016 Environmental Achievement Awards honoring the Seattle-based company’s work on Nov.2, 2016, in Washington, D.C. Foss and its sister companies have 37 vessels with 10 or more years without an environmental incident, with 11 of those vessels achieving 20+ years of environmental excellence. The Wedell Foss and the Stacey Foss are just two of the Foss Maritime vessels that have been free of environmental mishaps for more than 20 years.

“We are truly honored by this award, since it underscores our dedication to the highest safety standards and care for the environment,” said John Parrott, Foss CEO. “These values are an important part of our corporate culture and also what our customers demand.”

The awards are open to all owners and operators of vessels that operate on oceans or inland waterways.

“Foss’ commitment to safeguarding the environmental is something that we take great pride in,” said Susan Hayman, Vice President of HSQE and External Affairs at Foss. “We engineer and build our state-of-the-art vessels to exceed environmental and safety requirements. Foss Maritime Vice President of HSQE & External Affairs Appointed by President Obama to Key Administration Post

SEATTLE–  Foss Maritime VP of HSQE & External Affairs, Susan Hayman, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to the United States Merchant Marine Academy’s (USMMA) Board of Visitors.

The Board of Visitors provides oversight, advice and recommendations on matters relating to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Board is made up of Congressional representatives and Presidential appointees, including two alumni. This key administrative post is for a term of two years, commencing at the beginning of each Congress.

Hayman is a 1980 graduate of USMMA and a 1986 graduate of Harvard Business School. After several years of sea-going experience, Hayman held various key management positions within the maritime industry. She was called to Active Duty in the U.S. Navy in 2002 and began her career with Foss in 2006 as VP of HSQE.

In his official nomination of this and other key posts President Obama said, “I am proud that such experienced and committed individuals have agreed to serve the American people in these important roles. I look forward to working with them.”

The United States Merchant Marine Academy is operated by the Maritime Administration (MARAD), one of the modal agencies of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Academy educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers of exemplary character who serve America’s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war.

Northern Air Cargo begins Caribbean services

MIAMI: Anchorage-based Northern Air Cargo (NAC) is to begin cargo charter services from Miami to several Caribbean destinations on November 01.

The airline will operate a B737-300 freighter twice a week between MIA, San Juan, PR and Saint Martin; a weekly flight linking MIA and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and a once a week service between MIA, Port-au-Prince, Haiti and Santo Domingo.

“We look forward to welcoming Northern Air Cargo to MIA, and we wish them success on their expansion to the Latin American and Caribbean region,” said Miami-Dade Aviation director Emilio González. “MIA’s vast route network across the globe, in addition to our evolving cargo logistics infrastructure, continues to attract freighter airlines from around the world.”

NAC is the third all-cargo airline to start service at MIA this year. In April, Canadian airline KF Cargo launched charter freight service between MIA and multiple points in South America. In November, U.S. carrier 21 Air is scheduled to begin eight weekly roundtrip freighter flights to Latin America, with six weekly frequencies between MIA and Bogotá, and two weekly flights between MIA, Panama City and Guatemala City.

Founded in 1956, NAC operates scheduled and charter services linking 13 destinations throughout Alaska from Anchorage.

Hawaii Petroleum Receives Maui Nonprofit Directors’ Association Award –

“Community Business Award”

Maui, Hawaii – The Maui Nonprofit Directors Association recently announced its award recipients at its 2016 Legislative Pau Hana event.  Hawaii Petroleum was awarded the “Community Business Award” recognizing their impressive work as an outstanding business leader in the non-profit community.

Hawaii Petroleum has a long history of community giving, donating thousands of dollars to charitable organizations and fundraising events throughout the Big Island and Maui County.   One such program is Hawaii Petroleum’s popular Ohana Fuels “Fuel up. Do good.” program.  Ohana Fuels partners with nonprofit organizations serving the needs of the local community by donating a portion of the proceeds of every gallon of gasoline sold at its stations in that community. Donations from gasoline sales during the first half of this year on the islands of Maui and the Big Island were more than $30,000.

In addition to its donations from the “Fuel up. Do good.” program, so far in 2016 Hawaii Petroleum has donated $77,499 to local communities, $45,000 of which is their contribution to Saltchuk’s Hawaii Regional Giving Program.  Hawaii Petroleum is a subsidiary of Saltchuk, a Seattle-based privately owned family of diversified transportation and distribution companies.  Saltchuk prides itself on its commitment to community giving and support, calling it the very heart of the company’s culture.  Over the past decade, Saltchuk companies have given an average of $2.5 million each year, totaling more than $20 million in cash and in-kind support to the communities in which they operate.

This also allows the nonprofits the use of the Minit Stops to conduct car washes which brings not only additional revenue to the agencies but also gives them exposure in the community.  I am honored to have not only recommended Hawaii Petroleum for the “Community Business Award” but to also see that the rest of the Maui nonprofits felt the same during the voting process.  The nonprofit community recognizes the difference they have made and how they continue to impact the lives of those in need in our community.
