A Letter From Our Owners
We were in our teens when our Dad, Mike Garvey, co-founded Saltchuk in 1982. In 2009 when we became majority shareholders, we committed to continuing Dad’s vision of creating a values-driven family of companies where every employee would be proud for their children to work. This drives us to put our values first, and we ask that each and every person working at Saltchuk companies do the same.
While the name Saltchuk is not widely known, many of our companies provide critical services in remote markets and are household names in the communities they serve: Foss, TOTE, Northern Aviation Services, Hyak Supply Chain, Tropical Shipping and NorthStar Energy represent key lines of business that make up Saltchuk. We are committed to providing stable and financially sound ownership to our operating companies, including the capital for reinvestment and growth.
Our companies are often referred to as asset-intensive because of the specialized equipment they use. But our most valuable asset is not a truck, tugboat, airplane or a ship–it’s the people who work throughout our family of companies. We value the contribution of every employee and are always seeking to grow our teams with people who share our values and take pride in the work they do.
Our values are key to our success and unite our operations under the same mission:
- Safety, so that every one of our employees returns home to their families each night.
- Reliability, because our companies provide essential services to some of the most remote communities in the country.
- Commitment, which encompasses our promise to make a difference and contribute to the long term success of our people and the communities and environments in which we work.
As a family business, we have challenged ourselves to pass Saltchuk on to our own children in even better shape than when we took on ownership. We invite you to explore our site, visit our job board or contact one of our companies to learn more about how we can work together..
