Jacksonville, FL– Sea Star Line, LLC has been named one of the top ocean carriers in the 2014 Quest for Quality Awards conducted by Logistics Management magazine.
The rankings are based on survey results from more than 7450 individuals in the logistics industry. Scores were provided for five different categories: On-Time Performance, Value, Information Technology, Customer Service, and Equipment & Operations. The scores are presented by individual category and as a combined result that is weighted by each category’s importance – as determined by the shippers. Sea Star Line received one of the highest combined scores for all ocean carriers and was ranked third overall.
“We are extremely pleased to be recognized by our shipping partners and Logistics Management Magazine.” said Tim Nolan, Sea Star Line president. “Our team has been working intensely to streamline and improve our processes to match the needs of the Puerto Rico market. To be honored with this award confirms the alignment of our efforts.”

AGL Resources Closes Sale of Tropical Shipping to Saltchuk

ATLANTA- AGL Resources Inc. (NYSE: GAS) today announced it has closed the sale of its Tropical Shipping and Seven Seas Insurance businesses to a subsidiary of Seattle-based Saltchuk Resources, Inc.. As a result of the sale, AGL Resources received approximately $220 million in after-tax net proceeds and repatriated cash, subject to certain post-closing adjustments.
“We are excited to close this important transaction, and to further simplify our business to focus on our core competencies,” said Andrew W. Evans, executive vice president and chief financial officer of AGL Resources. “We have worked to be good stewards of the Tropical Shipping business, and have significant confidence in the management team in place. Further, we believe that Saltchuk represents the best ultimate owner to ensure that Tropical’s markets are served responsibly. We will greatly miss our interaction with all individuals involved but believe that we have served all constituents well.”
Foss Maritime Welcomes New Vice President for Human Resources

HR veteran brings more than 25 years of experience
SEATTLE- Foss Maritime announced that Darlene Crowder will join the company in early August as the Vice President for Human Resources. She will be based at the company’s corporate office in Seattle, Washington.
Crowder brings over 25 years of experience to the position, having worked extensively in human resources throughout the Seattle area.
Previously the top HR leader at Swedish Medical Group, Crowder oversaw the complete restructuring of all HR processes, positions and technology platforms during a business affiliation between Providence Health & Services and Swedish Health Services.
Crowder is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources and has an Accelerated Implementation Methodology Accreditation. A member of the National Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) as well as the Seattle SHRM chapter, she has worked for several Seattle-area companies and has provided human resources expertise to private employers as an independent consultant.

Alaska Pacific University Receives $150,000 Saltchuk Scholarship

Gift will provide opportunities in post-secondary education for Alaska students
Anchorage- Alaska Pacific University (APU) is pleased to announce a $150,000 scholarship from Saltchuk Alaska companies that will be awarded to support the education of APU students. Priority will be given to recipients from communities throughout the state where Saltchuk companies Carlile Transportation, Cook Inlet Tug & Barge/Foss, Delta Western/Inlet Petroleum, Northern Air Cargo and Totem Ocean Trailer Express operate. Those communities include: Anchorage; Aniak; Barrow; Bethel; Bristol Bay; Dillingham; Fairbanks; Haines; Juneau; Kenai Peninsula; King Salmon; Kodiak; Kotzebue; Homer; the North Slope Borough; Seward; Unalaska; Wrangell, and; Yakutat.
“The Saltchuk family of companies has had a long-time relationship with APU that dates back more than three decades. Through a wide-range of cross company collaboration and synergies the Saltchuk Alaska scholarship program with APU was created. We are prideful of our post-secondary education priority and especially that we are able to focus on the communities where our companies operate and our employees live and work in” said Harry McDonald, Managing Director Alaska.
The Saltchuk Alaska Scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher enrolled at least half time in any area of study at APU, an institution recognized around the world for its innovative curriculum of project-based education and collaborative learning community (learn more at www.alaskapacific.edu). In the spirit of knowledge sharing and learning as part of the scholarship program, recipients are required to participate in mentorship and job-shadowing with one of the Saltchuk family companies. Scholarship funds will be distributed in fall, 2014 and spring, 2015. “APU thanks Saltchuk for its generous gift which will help fuel APU’s spirit of Active Learning in many students from around Alaska,” said Don Bantz, APU President.
