Nick McDaniel changed how the Saltchuk family of companies understands safety.
Few individuals touch as many corners of Saltchuk safety culture as McDaniel. By building consistency across platforms and helping teams transform raw data into meaningful action, he ensures that every operating company has the tools to identify risks, protect employees, and continuously improve.
“That’s been the most significant shift,” he says: “using technology not just to document the past, but to help influence what happens next.”
As Saltchuk’s Origami platform expert, he works tirelessly to manage safety data, reporting, training, and documentation—serving not just one company, but every operating company in the Saltchuk family.
Forty-five years in, his advice is simple: stay curious.

Olivia Mitchell & Captain Ryan Meyer | Deckhand Engineer and Management Captain, Foss Maritime, Tacoma
Safety training in harbor tug operations often relies on verbal descriptions and two-dimensional diagrams to explain complex, high-stakes maneuvers, leaving gaps in crew understanding and shared situational awareness.
Working entirely on their own time and with their own resources, Ryan and Mitchell designed and hand-built ten complete sets of wooden tug, tow, and ship models for use as training aids across the Pacific Northwest harbor fleet. The models feature magnetized bases, so crews can use them on whiteboards and tug bulkheads during safety meetings, onboarding sessions, and operational briefings, bringing harbor-assist scenarios to life in three dimensions.
“This was by mariners, for mariners,” Meyer says. “We made this for our shipmates out here. It was us trying to take care of each other.”

Elias arrived as the sole operator at the Port of Montana, wrote a Standard Operating Procedure for ethanol transloading, and built a consistent safety culture among the drivers who work the site.
George Zilonis | Operations Manager, Hawaii Island, Hawaii Petroleum, Hilo, HI
Zilonis drove a sharp increase in hazard recognitions among Big Island fuel drivers, developed driver-completed fuel tank inspections, and personally trained his team on telematics.
Captain Sean Russell | Captain, Alaskan Frontier, Alaska Tanker Company
Captain Russell helped bring the Alaskan Frontier back from years of cold layup while raising monthly Safety Observation Conversations from 20 to 34, with every crew member submitting at least one.
Charles Ford | Boatswain, Alaskan Explorer, Alaska Tanker Company
Twenty-five years at ATC, and the first person every new crew member meets. Ford has guided dozens of green sailors into long, safety-conscious maritime careers.
Jeff Morton | Director, Facility Maintenance & GSE Services, Northern Air Cargo, Anchorage, AK
After a serious injury exposed a design flaw, Morton coordinated a fleet-wide retrofit of all 64 mobile ULD handling stations, eliminating the pinch point without disrupting a single customer delivery.
Justin Byrd | Equipment Manager, First Coast Terminals, Jacksonville, FL
Byrd has led a 47-person maintenance team through more than 250,000 hours of high-risk work since the terminal opened in 2021, with zero recordable or lost-time incidents.
Gail Coleman | Hazardous & Cargo Support Supervisor, TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, Jacksonville, FL
Coleman built and taught a year-long Hazardous Materials Master Class for more than 100 employees. The 2025 National Cargo Bureau follow-up audit found zero nonconformities.

More than 200,000 miles over two years with zero DOT violations, citations, or preventable incidents, Jones anchors the night shift and earned the Samsara SAFEST Driver Award in 2024 and 2025.
Captain Todd Van Rossen | Captain, Tug Mamo, Young Brothers, Nawiliwili, Kauai
When new pier fendering made his crew’s boarding step unsafe, Captain Van Rossen designed the replacement by hand, then invoked Stop Work Authority to get it built before the old one became unusable.
