Growth in the West
Saltchuk’s corporate home office and three of its six business units—NorthStar Energy, Saltchuk Marine, and Saltchuk Aviation—are housed in shared offices in downtown Seattle.
With roots in the maritime industry, expansion down the West Coast came first. Over time, our presence in the Western U.S. has steadily expanded, most recently with the addition of two energy distribution companies in California and Montana.
Our History in the Region
1982: Saltchuk’s founders came together to purchase Totem Ocean Trailer Express, now known as TOTE Maritime Alaska. This acquisition laid the foundation for Saltchuk’s enduring commitment to safe, reliable transportation between Alaska and the Lower 48.
1986: Foss Maritime, a respected leader in marine transportation and harbor services, joined the Saltchuk family of companies, strengthening our maritime presence on the West Coast and beyond.
1987: TOTE Services, a provider of ship management and technical services, became part of Saltchuk, supporting our mission to deliver innovative and dependable maritime solutions.
1996: AmNav, founded in 1976, joined Saltchuk Marine, enhancing our harbor towing and ship assist operations in major West Coast ports with a reputation for safety and service.
2006: Northern Air Cargo (NAC), Alaska’s largest all-cargo airline, joined the Saltchuk family as our first air cargo company. Today, Saltchuk Aviation is headquartered in Seattle, supporting air freight services across Alaska and beyond.
2013: Carlile Transportation, founded in 1980, became part of Saltchuk, expanding our logistics and transportation capabilities. Carlile’s Tacoma warehouse serves as a key hub for Alaska-bound cargo, ensuring timely and reliable delivery.
2021: The Jankovich Company, founded in 1933, joined NorthStar Energy, Saltchuk’s energy distribution business unit. Jankovich brings decades of expertise in marine and land-based fuel distribution throughout California and the Pacific region.
2022: Naniq, founded in 2008, joined Saltchuk, further strengthening our logistics and cargo handling services with a focus on innovation and customer satisfaction.
2023: CityServiceValcon, founded in 1932, joined Saltchuk, expanding our energy distribution footprint across the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions with a legacy of service and reliability.
2024: Alaska Tanker Company (ATC) became a Saltchuk company when its parent company, Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG), was acquired. ATC brings a strong record of safe and efficient crude oil transportation to our growing family of companies.
