1998: SeaStar Line, established in 1985, joined our family of companies, marking Saltchuk’s entry into the Puerto Rican trade. Now known as TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, the company operates dedicated, twice-weekly service between the U.S. mainland and Puerto Rico.
2014: Tropical Shipping, founded in 1963, along with Deluxe Freight (est. 1996), CaribTrans (est. 1985), VI Cargo (est. 1993), and Seven Seas Insurance (est. 1967), joined the Saltchuk family, establishing a new Saltchuk line of business, International Shipping, with reliable ocean shipping, logistics, and insurance solutions throughout the Caribbean.
2014: Interocean Management Corporation (IOM), established in 1975 and now known as TOTE Services, joined Saltchuk in 1989 and relocated to Jacksonville in 2014.
2016: StratAir, founded in 2000, became part of the Saltchuk family, enhancing our air cargo capabilities with scheduled and charter services throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.
2019: Puerto Rico Terminals was established to provide expert port services for vessels arriving at the San Juan port, supporting the efficient movement of goods across the region.
2021: First Coast Terminals was founded to deliver stevedoring and cargo services in Jacksonville, Florida, ensuring seamless operations for vessels and cargo at this key gateway.
2024: Overseas Shipholding Group, established in 1948, and its subsidiary Aptamus Carbon Solutions, founded in 2023, joined the Saltchuk family, expanding our expertise in energy transportation and carbon solutions.
2024: Aqua Gulf, founded in 1966, joined TOTE Group as part of the new TOTE Logistics business line, providing integrated logistics solutions and strengthening our end-to-end supply chain capabilities in the Caribbean.

Building Community Resiliency through Public-Private Partnerships
- Every year, Tropical Shipping collaborates with local community emergency management agencies and industry partners such as Chambers of Commerce and Hotel and Tourism Associations to host disaster management workshops. These workshops focus on building best practices in public-private partnerships to prioritize disaster preparedness and business recovery in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Florida.
Supporting Long-Term Economic and Social Progress in Puerto Rico
- In early 2025, Saltchuk announced partnerships with the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) and the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) to establish two pioneering programs focused on transportation and logistics. These strategic initiatives seek to develop skilled professionals, enhance industry research, and support long-term economic and social progress on the island.
- Center of Excellence for Transportation and Logistics at UPR Mayagüz, the first Center of Excellence in Transportation and Logistics (CETL) in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean
- Talent Development Program for Transportation and Logistics at PUPR, designed to equip students and professionals with the specialized skills required for careers in transportation and logistics
In 2024, Saltchuk companies provided $1.55M in grants to support non-profit organizations in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean.
- Since 2015, Saltchuk’s Regional Giving Committee has worked together to invest in programs focused on youth development and post-secondary education. Some of our proudest accomplishments include an ongoing partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico, funding cadet seatime scholarships through the American Caribbean Maritime Foundation, and supporting youth empowerment organizations such as I Am A Girl.
