Dave Karp

An Opportunity to Advance and Lead

Dave Karp first became familiar with Saltchuk as a member of the TOTE Anchorage Community Advisory Board in 2000. He joined the company six years later as the Chief Operating Officer of Northern Air Cargo when Saltchuk purchased NAC from the Sholten family. Karp currently serves as Senior Vice President and Managing Director for Alaska. “My predecessor in the role retired, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to focus my activities on Alaska after 12 years of being based here but spending a lot of time traveling to Hawaii and Florida, growing the airline. I was ready for a change and being able to advance while still working for Saltchuk was a perfect fit for me.”

From Marine Services to Energy Distribution

Henry Palmer joined Foss Maritime in 2014 as Port Captain. He was promoted to California General Manager before taking an opportunity to join NorthStar Energy as President, Delta Western, Inlet Energy, Alaska Petroleum Distributing. "Speaking specifically of career progression, I believe growing internally generally provides a more cohesive and consistent trajectory. As tenure builds our strengths and achievements become known. We align tighter to goals, mission, and values as our familiarity with policy, procedure and systems increases thereby shortening our learning curve to achieve desired objectives"

Helping to Create a Culture of Excellence

Ryan Air—the Alaskan bush freight carrier founded by Wilfred and Eva Ryan in 1953—joined the Saltchuk family of companies in December 2022. "Our integration with a larger company like Saltchuk strengthens us from within, enabling us to foster a work environment that attracts top talent and inspires employees. We can offer more comprehensive training programs, career advancement opportunities, and the chance to collaborate with experts across the Saltchuk family. Investing in our people creates a culture of excellence where everyone feels valued, encouraged, and motivated to excel."

Mutual Respect and a Strong Reputation

Katrina Anderson was the fourth generation to work the family business, Cook Inlet Tug & Barge. Today, she is a Captain with the Foss Maritime PNW fleet. "It was a tough decision to sell, but regulation changes and growth in the industry were making it difficult for our small family company to keep up. I’m just glad that Saltchuk could absorb us into their family. I’ve known about Saltchuk for most of my life: my dad started pushing the TOTE ships into the Port of Anchorage in the ’70s. We’ve always thought highly of their business practices and were thrilled when they approached us about acquiring Cook Inlet Tug & Barge."
