JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

Responsible for overall management of assigned shipyard. Supervisory duties include management of the shipyard crew as well as shipyard industrial relations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Shipyard Operations
  • Exercises direct supervision of shipyard craftmen: responsible for production, engineering and estimates.
  • Develops and maintains the shipyard production schedules, dry-dock schedule, and methods of executing major jobs.
  • Directly supervises General Foreman who in turn supervises approximately 28 people (average).
  • Works with shipyard manager to develop commercial vessel repair business: formulates and implements new methods and procedures.
  • Works with shipyard manager for scheduling, planning, and execution of vessel repair and conversation activities.
  • Works with shipyard manager to interface with engineering and naval architecture, whether accomplished in house or sub-contracted.
  • Provides input for all engineering work and estimates produced by shipyard. Makes engineering recommendations to marine operations, marketing, and customers.
  • Services Operations and Marketing as a consultant.
  • Assures compliance with safety standards established by OSHA, OROSHA and other safety organizations.
  • Senior Member of Shipyard Safety Committee, implements corrective action of noted safety hazards practices where possible stops unsafe practices when noted.
  • Works with shipyard manager to ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and permit requirements; takes a pro-active approach to ensure compliance.
General Management
  • Helps develop and implement shipyard policies for standard work practices, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Works with Shipyard Manager to prepare shipyard capital and operation budgets.
Human Resources
  • Develops personnel policies specific to the shipyard working with the shipyard manager and the HR Department to ensure legal and company compliance.
  • Works with shipyard manager and HR in supervising the implementation of all personnel policies in the shipyard.
  • Works with shipyard manager to develop employee skills both individual and collective.
  • Develops HR at the shipyard for good working relationships with other departments and commercial customers.
  • Ensures compliance with all laws, policies, and procedures relating to employment including recruiting, training, development, promotion, discipline, and termination.
  • Effectively communicates regional goals and objectives.
  • Provides direction and leadership to achieve company Core Values, Mission and Safety Vision.
  • Processes employee evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Directs, motivates and develops employees for maximum performance.
  • Performs special duties and other projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to all company policies.
  • Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested.
Supervisory and Leadership of Direct Staff
  • Responsible for all matters of employment including recruiting, training, development, promotion, discipline and termination.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of repair and fabrication methods, shop practices, shop supervision, vessel operations, safety practices, planning, scheduling, estimating, and regulatory agencies required.
  • Thorough knowledge of operational aspects of tugs, barges, and other commercial water vessels.
  • Knowledge of economics applicable to the workboat repair industry.
  • Ability to formulate and implement cost effective solutions to routine maintenance and repair problems. Must exercise production judgment in response to inquiries from other departments.
  • Must be able to use computer aided design software for drawing a creation and review.
  • Ability to formulate and implement cost-effective solutions to routine maintenance and repair problems. Must possess thorough knowledge of operational aspects of tugs, barges, and other commercial water vessels.
  • Ability to formulate, document, and implement strategic and detailed financial plans for the shipyard operating both as n adjunct to company and as commercial shipyard; knowledge of economics applicable to workboat repair industry.
  • Ability to exercise ethical business judgement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma and 5 years of relevant work experience in marine industry, including 3 years of focused project management and new construction experience is required. A minimum of 5 years experience in a management or supervisory role in the shipyard or metal fabrication industry.
