TOTE Maritime Alaska

TOTE Maritime Alaska, the leader in safe and reliable service to Alaska, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Business Development Executive for our Anchorage office to join our team.

The Senior Business Development Executive is responsible for identifying and developing new business opportunities with an emphasis on project cargo. Developing long range strategy, goals and KPIs for acquiring new business, project cargo, non-conventional cargo and targeted cargoes. Onboarding new customers by coordinating with operations/fleet, pricing, customer service and finance. Other responsibilities include providing oversight and communication for new business from origin to destination ensuring seamless service.

Key Responsibilities

    • Develop strategies and gain new business in the area of project logistic freight, non-conventional liner freight and conventional new business
    • Develop targeted industry relations and a working knowledge of Alaska
    • Develop relationships with other carriers (LTL, barges, etc.) and logistics vendors in the lower 48, Canada and Alaska to be able to offer a full service to potential customers.
    • Review and assess new customer’s special cargo/projects/general cargo needs and define the scope while working with the internal departments to provide the customer a quote/proposal.
    • Contribute as part of the project team for all communication (conference calls, meetings, etc.) providing regular status reports and oversight of all aspects of Project Cargo: business development, pre-sales coordination, sales, operations/logistics, transportation, etc., coordination, tracking and tracing, direct liaison between client, vendors and TOTE.
    • Gain understanding of the complete TOTE process and operating systems
    • Create SMART goals and objectives for the position such as safety, yield and FEU goals, both identifying market opportunities and closing business
    • Incorporate the quality program into project cargo moves including meeting established guidelines as well as submitting suggestions for improvements in project related areas, ensuring insurance/liability coverage and predetermining acceptance by Tacoma and Anchorage operations to meet the ISO requirements before accepting their cargo
    • Conduct debriefing and internal lessons learned follow up on all projects. Prepare an after-action report that can be used in future moves
    • Coordinate with TOTE marketing to enhance brand and reach target segments and markets, as well as identify clients within the market

Background Preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree – preferred
  • Minimum of five years in Transportation/Sales/project management role in a complex business environment – preferred

  • Possess a working knowledge of Alaska and transportation
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and develop new contacts
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, parallel projects; experienced in setting goals by defining and prioritizing specific, realistic objectives
  • Exhibit independent judgment and analytical skills by making sound, justifiable decisions and acting to solve problems
  • Demonstrate success in effectively communicating with all levels of business leaders and must have a verifiable track record of relationship building with both internal and external customersDemonstrate effective written and oral communication and a proven ability to understand, interpret, and communicate complex/detailed information
  • Demonstrate success in leading, influencing and managing in a team environment
  • Extensive operations and logistic knowledge and strong business acumen
  • Demonstrate initiative, resilience, creativity and innovation
  • Must have a thorough understanding of the documentation, legal requirements and responsibilities of a carrier of freight is essential, so transportation experience is a core requirement
  • Computer proficiency in and ability to utilize all of Windows and MS Professional Office standard applications and CRM
  • Travel as necessary to support job dutie
