Assist with various maintenance responsibilities as part of the training required to develop job knowledge essential for full time employment as a mechanic in one of the company functional maintenance departments.
Repairs and maintains vessel machinery and related systems. Works on any part of the vessel to prevent delayed sailing. Operates fork-lift to move heavy equipment. Performs repairs, attachments and modification of vessel and equipment. Fabricates parts and equipment for vessels. Ensures safe operation with stand-by present with fire hose and extinguisher. Repairs, fabricates or modifies equipment as needed. Welds and burns in ballast and other tanks as directed. Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains and installs electrical equipment, air conditioning, refrigeration equipment and machinery on vessels. Accurately estimates materials needed, orders parts, and follows up with purchasing on ordered parts. Draws new and modifies existing wiring or electrical schematics and diagrams. Assists with the design and installation of new electrical systems as needed. Performs voyage repairs as well as traveling to various outports to perform vessel repairs. Responds to emergency calls after working hours if necessary.
Performs basic preventative maintenance on all equipment, including required inspections on all equipment and handles existing problems. Troubleshoots electrical and hydraulic systems on all equipment. Performs major and minor repairs on all engines and transmissions. Makes quality fabrications. Repairs oil, hydraulic fluid, and fuel tanks. Makes local service calls to service and repair Tropical equipment, as required.
Inspects and tests 20 and 40 foot mechanical reefers and gen-sets. Performs complete preventative maintenance on mechanical reefers and gen-sets as needed. Maintains accurate records of work performed. Performs basic corrective maintenance on loaded casualty units. Operates jockey truck, fuel truck, fork-lift, and spreader to cover for others in their absence. Performs daily monitoring rounds on loaded units.
Maintains and repairs all trailers, containers, bulk tankers and chassis. Completely refurbish chassis or containers when their economic life has been extended. Responsible for repairs and maintenance of chassis tires. Responsible for repair and maintenance of chassis electrical and air brake systems. Responsible for work orders, listing all materials, and labor for all work assigned.
Keeps work area and equipment used clean and orderly and safe.
Participates in training seminars, classes, and technically oriented workshops.
Performs fueling duties when assigned in absence of a Fueler.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE: No previous experience required
LICENSE: Valid Local Driver's License. Class"A" with Hazardous endorsement or the ability to obtain.
PHYSICAL: Operations - Manual dexterity to perform repetitive motion tasks on computer or handheld. Ability to frequently twist, bend, reach, squat, kneel, climb on equipment, push/pull 50 to 100 pounds, crawl, lift and carry at least 80 pounds on a daily basis. Able to withstand constant exposure to extreme weather conditions.
