NorthStar Energy

The NorthStar Indirect Tax and Staff Accountant is responsible for the preparation and filing of non-income taxes and supporting the general ledger function for NorthStar and its Shared Services companies.  These responsibilities include ERP and tax systems administration, tax reporting, analysis, tax research, audits, planning, and other indirect taxes in the US to ensure NorthStar’s compliance with tax laws and to minimize overall tax liabilities.  In addition, this role supports the Senior Accountant in the general ledger and conducts recuring general ledger activities each month, including performing variance analysis to identify and analyze discrepancies that may exist in the general ledger.


Summary of Essential Job Functions


The Indirect Tax & Staff Accountant will perform the following:


  • Prepare tax calculations, workpapers, journal entries and reconciliations required for accurate tax reporting
  • Prepare and review tax returns, payments, review tax authority notices, and work with tax jurisdictions to resolve issues and improve processes, including maintenance of the tax calendar
  • Monitor and assist with real property tax assessments and appeals and other tax compliance matters
  • Assist with tax audits and tax refund/credit reviews, including preparing documentation, assisting with proposed adjustments, and identify and recommend actions to resolve issues
  • Monitor changes to laws and rates, perform tax research, and clearly communicate verbally and in writing recommended business applications, impacts, or changes to NorthStar’s tax policies or practices
  • Provide tax guidance regarding existing or new business activities, including forecast and budget support
  • Determine, maintain, or review tax requirements, classifications, exemptions, rules, rates, and tax updates
  • Maintain all business and operating licenses
  • Reconcile and maintain key balance sheet accounts, including all tax accounts and other GL accounts as assigned
  • Prepare and post journal entries into the general ledger, including tax accruals when appropriate
  • Utilize knowledge of internal controls to identify potential weaknesses in the internal control environment
  • Assist the internal and external audit by providing source documentation or other information as requested
  • Utilize experience to drive improvements and efficiencies
  • Other duties and ad hoc projects as assigned

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or tax and 3+ years of relevant accounting and indirect tax experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred
  • Experience in Sage and/or Blackline desired


  • Strong attention to detail with an emphasis on accuracy
  • General understanding of US GAAP and other accounting concepts
  • Strong Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite proficiency
  • Awareness, understanding, and adherence to internal controls
  • Ability to research and problem solve independently while utilizing strong analytical skills
