TOTE Maritime Alaska

TOTE Maritime Alaska, the leader in safe and reliable service to Alaska, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Cargo Support Specialist for our Tacoma office to join our team.

The Cargo Support Specialist is responsible for providing excellent customer service by coordinating all aspects of the customer’s shipments including, but not limited to, the essential functions of the job description below. The scheduled work hours of this position will be Monday thru Friday Swing Shift.

Key Responsibilities

  • A Cargo Support Specialist will act as a liaison, to provide services information and resolve any emerging issues that our customer accounts might face with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Build sustainable relationships and trust with customer accounts through open and interactive communication.
  • Assist customers by pre-approving and coordinating their hazardous shipments per the 49CFR. Answer questions regarding regulations and stipulations with confidence.
  • Natural problem-solver who is confident at troubleshooting and investigating to resolve various terminal issues associated with cargo acceptance at the gate. Assign equipment to customers as needed.
  • Coordinate with terminal operations on capacity issues, prioritizing cargo and providing trailer booking count to assist with vessel planning. Coordinate yard activities with the Stevedores.
  • Supports cross functional terminal operations.
  • Coordinate southbound customer notification and scheduling; coordinate northbound transportation of loads and empties to meet the needs of internal and external customer.
  • Contact customers for scheduling; coordinating transportation to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
  • Provide excellent customer communication to internal and external customers.
  • Identify process improvements during daily tasks, and work with assigned team to improve and document procedures.
  • Issue and cancel bookings; not limited to immediate needs. Reconcile northbound trailer and vehicle totals after sailing. Prepare customer’s documents to assist internal groups with billing process.
  • Coordinate repair services for bad order equipment.
  • Report on developing market conditions, service issues and other activities.
  • Effectively perform additional tasks and projects as assigned.

Background Required

  • Associates’ degree preferred.
  • One to two years customer service experience, preferably in transportation.
  • DOT 49CFR HazMat Carrier Requirements (Water)

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Computer literate, with the ability to utilize standard software applications and be proficient in Windows and MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
