The airline, which has 16 to 18 daily flights between Honolulu and all major neighbor island airports, will use the facility as its primary operational hub.
New building is part of the state's four-year, $739 million modernization project for Honolulu Airport.

May 03--Aloha Air Cargo celebrated the groundbreaking of its new cargo facility Thursday with a ceremony that kicks off the beginning of the state's four-year, $739 million modernization project for Honolulu Airport.

The company, which has 16 to 18 daily flights between Honolulu and all major neighbor island airports, will use the facility as its primary operational hub. The facility will consolidate existing cargo operations, aircraft maintenance, loading docks, support offices and customer service operations into an integrated facility on the Ewa side of the airport.

It is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, with Aloha Air Cargo expected to move in during the first quarter of 2014.

The statewide airports modernization program will cost $2.7 billion and be funded through airport user fees, which include airline rents and landing fees, federal grants, passenger facility charges, and airport revenue bonds that will be paid back with airport user fees.

Aloha Air Cargo, which has more than 400 employees, operates a fleet of four Boeing 737-200 freighters that have the capacity to carry approximately 30,000 pounds each. Items shipped include fresh bakery products, fish and seafood, produce, tropical fish, live animals, time-sensitive shipments, cut floral and tropical fruit export products as well as general cargo. Among its 2,000 customers are DHL, Federal Express, Love's Bakery, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service.

The new 115,000-square-foot facility will include more than 2,400 square feet of refrigerator capacity and five drive-up docks for shippers. More than 31,000 square feet of the facility is under a roof that will shelter cargo from wind, sun and rain. Aloha Air Cargo transports more than 100 million pounds annually into and across the state.

This expansion project is an investment in Aloha Air Cargo's future in serving the people and businesses of Hawaii, connecting individuals and the industry both within and beyond our islands, Gov. Neil Abercrombie said at the ceremony.

Aloha Air Cargo, which this month is commemorating its fifth anniversary as an independent company, was purchased out of bankruptcy for $10.5 million by Seattle-based Saltchuk Resources on May 14, 2008, following the shutdown of Aloha Airlines on March 31 of that year. Saltchuk already had a presence in the islands after having purchased Young Bros. and Hawaiian Tug & Barge in 1999.

Our new operational hub ... is a testament to the vision, success and passion of our employees, said Pat Rosa, chief operating officer for Aloha Air Cargo. "Our investment in this state-of-the-art facility represents Aloha's ongoing commitment to the people and businesses of Hawaii that we are here for the long haul."

Earth Day has been an American institution since its founding in 1970. Each year, we recognize the many efforts made across the nation to reduce our carbon footprint and move toward a greener economy.

This year, with our economy growing and shipments of everything from raw materials to parts and equipment to finished products increasing, I'd like to call attention to recent improvements in the shipping industry.

For example, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), a marine transportation company, is planning to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container ships to operate between Jacksonville, FL, and San Juan, PR. With cleaner-burning LNG, we can significantly decrease emissions on our waterways.

According to TOTE, the 764-foot vessels will be the largest ships in the world primarily powered by LNG. In addition, the company is also planning to convert two existing diesel-electric powered vessels to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

Announcements like these are a proud moment for me because it demonstrates that the maritime industry is not only setting the bar high for greener transportation, but also taking the Obama Administration’s commitment to a clean energy economy seriously.

Foss hybrid tug in Long Beach - The vessels that travel along our waterways are a critical piece of the national transportation network. And although marine vessels emit fewer emissions than their counterparts on road and rail, we're happy to see that shipbuilders are not resting when it comes to reducing emissions and oil consumption.

The President has taken unprecedented action in aggressively working to reduce emissions and protect our environment. He set a national goal to cut America’s energy imports by one-third by 2025, and he proposed we meet this objective, in part, by reducing our transportation system’s enormous demand for oil.

As a world leader in freight transportation, the U.S. maritime shipping industry can play a decisive role in helping meet this goal. DOT's Maritime Administration and its partners have pioneered work on liquid natural gas and other clean, renewable fuel sources that are making shipping a greener industry.

The construction and modification of these four LNG vessels is a prime example of industry leaders at work, joining DOT in helping America meet this important goal.

Having sat in this chair for more than two decades, I must admit that I have become somewhat jaded in the sense that there are few developments which actually give me cause to pause. Of course there are the spectacular casualties that will never cease to amaze, but on the business side there are very few real showstoppers.

Then there was last month.

Just as I was literally packing up to head down to New Orleans for the International Workboat Show, news broke that U.S. ship owner TOTE Inc. had sealed the deal to build the world’s first LNG-powered containership (it is a dual fuel MAN main driver, but the full intent is to operate on LNG the majority of the time). As the ships (two firm, three options) are intended for the U.S. to Puerto Rico Jones Act trade, there was no surprise that they must be built in the U.S., in this case at San Diego-based NASSCO. On the surface, to think that a U.S. ship owner and a U.S. shipyard have collaborated to build a ground-breaking, technologically advanced, world-class ship that will not be painted grey is truly amazing. On the surface, that is.

I’m a little surprised that it came as fast as it came, but I’m not surprised that an American ship owner has decided to invest in this technology, succinctly summarized Ole Grøne, long-time Senior Vice President Low-Speed Sales and Promotions at MAN Diesel & Turbo.

Ship owners large and small are facing ever stringent rules governing the emissions their vessels put into the sea and into the air. TOTE, which runs six ships in its Puerto Rico and Alaska services, was forced to introduce new containerships, as the ships serving its Puerto Rico trade must be pulled from service in 2019 due to North American ECA regulations.

When I spoke to Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE Inc., last month regarding the deal, he essentially said the decision to build these groundbreaking ships with an LNG powered main drive was a no-brainer.

I don’t know what LNG is going to cost three years from now when the ships come out; but I absolutely know what the impact will be in terms of emissions: that’s not going to change. If there’s an advantage from a fuel cost perspective, that will be wonderful, but that’s not what this decision was based upon: it was purely an environmental consideration, Chiarello said.

And for followers of the U.S. shipbuilding market, it should equally be of little surprise that NASSCO landed the order. The shipyard has an established relationship with the owner, but more so it has – under the steady guidance of long-time leader and president Fred Harris – been an investor in itself, via relationships with design and procurement partner Daewoo Ship Engineering Company, and directly through investments in its facilities, people and modern management initiatives.

I think this contract symbolizes two significant points, said Harris. "First, the United States can still take a leading position in the global maritime industry by smartly teaming and learning from world-class shipbuilders … and second, this contract represents that the Jones Act is alive and well."

In the big picture, the TOTE deal is really just a microcosm of the trend that will define shipping to and through 2020. The focus on marine fuels, lubes and emissions is growing daily, and while vessel owners lament (to put it very nicely) additional layers of regulation, it is the reality of the world in which they operate.

Literally, it is almost impossible to turn a page in this publication this month which doesn’t in one way or another address energy and its effects on the shipping industry. The USS Makin Island, which was widely hailed as a technological marvel when it was delivered, is now back from its first deployment, and according to the Navy the fuel-saving numbers courtesy of the ship’s hybrid electric propulsion systems are staggering: 4 million gallons of fuel and more than $15 million saved.

While the global maritime market has been in a collective economic funk since the global financial crisis and ensuing economic malaise of 2008, many signs indicate the abyss has been reached, and in true cyclical maritime fashion, a collective ramp-up in business across the board can be expected starting today, but really picking up steam and moving fast from mid-2014 forward. While the notion of investing in your fleet to meet environmental regulations seven years down the road may sicken the stomach looking at current financials, you can be sure that the quality, long-term players are starting to invest today in preparation for tomorrow.

I am very grateful to my shipboard and shore side staff that year after year have contributed to make this company successful and to make all us proud of what TOTE, Inc. and Saltchuk represent in the maritime industry, said Aguirre. "Also I would like to thank all colleagues, shipping companies and regulatory bodies for their support. Finally I would like to welcome my successor Admiral Greene. Aloha Air Cargo, Family Programs Hawaii Support Children PDF Print E-mail
Air Cargo
Saturday, 22 December 2012 23:37
Aloha Air Cargo and Family Programs Hawaii announced a new partnership that assists the prevention of children from entering foster care, supports children and families already involved in the foster care system, and helps youths successfully transition out of foster care.

Just in time for the holidays, Aloha Air Cargo is providing much needed monetary sponsorship and awareness for FPH’s various programs by rallying the Hawaii community around a very simple, yet powerful message, "I help kids."

Our goal at Family Programs Hawaii has always been to provide quality care to the children of Hawaii, said FPH Director of Development, Connie Sizemore. "Partnering with Aloha has given us additional resources to acquire more volunteers, utilize their shipping network for movement of supplies and toys for neighbor island foster kids, and relaunch the ‘I help kids’ program shirts to spread the message of our organization."

Family Programs Hawaii is one of several organizations that Aloha Air Cargo supports through volunteerism, sweat equity, and assisting via in-kind cargo shipping.

The ongoing partnership extends through 2013 and beyond, where Aloha will continue to provide assistance for various FPH events across a variety of their major programs.

Being a close-knit ohana drives our passion for the communities we live and work within, and the families that make up those communities, said Aloha Chief Operating Officer, Pat Rosa. "In Hawaii, our children really are our most valuable resource. The social services provided by Family Programs Hawaii are so vital to the future of our youth; we want to ensure we’re doing our part to advance their efforts."

Headquartered in Honolulu, Aloha Air Cargo delivers fast, economical and reliable transport of goods between Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island. It became an independent cargo operator after the closure of Aloha Airlines passenger services in May 2008.

Aloha Tech Ops is a division of Aloha Air Cargo and provides maintenance and engineering services to airlines in the State of Hawaii.

Aloha Air Cargo is owned by Seattle-based Saltchuk Resources, which has been doing business in Hawaii since 2000 when it acquired Young Brothers/Hawaiian Tug & Barge.

Committed to the welfare of Hawaii and strengthening the local economy, the company also acquired Hawaii Fuel Network, Maui Petroleum and Minit Stop Stores in 2006.

Family Programs Hawaii is a local human service agency dedicated to protecting children and breaking the cycle of abuse. Family Programs Hawaii serves nearly 4,000 children and families involved in the child welfare system.
